When the Disney streaming service was established in 2015, it was predicted that Disney would compete with Netflix aggressively, and now we can see that Disney has beaten Netflix at least in terms of number of subscribers. However, the case is not as simple as it was thought to be. For instance, after the announcement of the Disney bundle with discounted subscriptions by its CEO, Bob Iger, in August 2019, analysts were expecting that Disney would beat its rival in 2020.
However, the customers of Netflix proved their loyalty to their favorite streaming platform. Now, more than two years have passed, but Netflix is still the king of the streamers. We should not neglect the audience of Netflix; they love various shows and serials that are offered exclusively by Netflix. Originality plays a vital role in making Netflix number one. No ad policy has also been an important factor in Netflix's success. A great number of people are ready to give more money for watching their lovely programs without interruption of ads. Disney has been using low-price plans to get more and more subscriptions, but now they have reached the point after which they cannot offer any discounts.
Another significant factor that helps Netflix be the leader of streaming platforms is its international audience. The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has millions of Netflix customers, of whom 36 million are Indians. Netflix introduced low-priced plans in India, that led to its success in one of the greatest markets in the world. According to the report published by Netflix, in 2022, Alia Bhatt's starrer Darling experienced the highest opening ever for any Netflix film in India, and it was watched in 28 countries with total viewing hours of over 32 million. Korea is another market where Netflix is making new records. From Squid Game to All of Us Are Dead are increasing the number of international subscribers. Squid Game is continuously number one, not only in non-English shows but also in English shows. Korean content attracted around 60% of Netflix subscribers. The Philippines is another country where Netflix captured 31% of the market.
